Animal conservation status: from LC to CR

The Conservation challenge asks you to rank eight species from lower to higher extinction risk using the playable LC, NT, VU, EN and CR categories.

The goal is not to memorize an entire list. It is to learn the conservation scale and discover that familiar-looking species can face very different levels of risk.

  2. NTNear Threatened
  3. VUVulnerable
  4. ENEndangered
  5. CRCritically Endangered

Frequently asked questions

What is a species conservation status?

It is a classification that summarizes extinction risk under an assessment system. IUCN Red List criteria can consider geographic range, population size and trends, and other indicators of extinction risk.

What do LC, NT, VU, EN and CR mean?

LC is Least Concern; NT is Near Threatened; VU is Vulnerable; EN is Endangered; and CR is Critically Endangered. The playable order is LC → NT → VU → EN → CR.

Which categories are considered “threatened”?

In Red List terminology, Vulnerable (VU), Endangered (EN) and Critically Endangered (CR) are collectively described as threatened categories. Near Threatened (NT) is close to qualifying but is not part of that group.

Does conservation status simply mean how many animals are left?

No. Population size can matter, but an assessment is not just a head count. It can also consider geographic range, population decline, fragmentation and extinction probability, among other criteria.

Why are DD and Not Evaluated not playable?

Data Deficient (DD) means there is not enough information to assess risk adequately; Not Evaluated (NE) means an assessment has not yet been made. Because neither represents a comparable point on the LC→CR scale, Cardsimals does not use them as playable answers.

What happens when two species share the same category?

They are equivalent for gameplay. Two VU species, for example, may appear in either order inside the same block. Cardsimals does not add a hidden tiebreaker based on name, ID or another attribute.

Can a conservation status change over time?

Yes. Species can be reassessed when new information becomes available. Cardsimals therefore separates the current catalog from historical challenges: a published game keeps the status used on that date.

Where does the Cardsimals conservation scale come from?

The mode follows the IUCN Red List category abbreviations and ordering for LC, NT, VU, EN and CR. The interface also displays the catalog data version to make the context of the challenge more transparent.
